Betty Milan

Betty Milan is a Brazilian psychoanalyst, essayist, novelist and playwright. She studied with Jacques Lacan in Paris during the 1970s. Beginning in 1993, Milan interviewed French intellectuals Octavio Paz, Jacques Derrida, Nathalie Sarraute and others for the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo. These interviews were later published as the collection O Seculo, which won an award from Brazil’s Associacao Paulista do Criticas de Arte in 1999. Milan’s most recent novel, Baal, is based on her Lebanese roots. In 2019, Milan was honored by Lebanon’s Minister of Foreign Affairs for “contributions to the country of her ancestors.” She lives in Sao Paulo. This is the North American premiere of Goodbye, Doctor.

Jacques Lacan, "the most controversial psychoanalyst since Freud," profoundly influenced psychoanalysis, philosophy, and modern psychotherapy. He reinterpreted Freud, asserting that the unconscious is structured like a language and introducing concepts like the "mirror stage" and the "Real," "Imaginary," and "Symbolic" orders. Lacan's use of "variable length sessions," often cutting them short, was intended to encourage self-discovery, though critics noted he saw up to 10 patients an hour without reducing fees.

Lacan was described as charming and stylish. He had a penchant for wearing lavish clothes, elaborate suits, and a mink coat. He smoked expensive cigars, and had a fondness for Jack Daniels.

Lacan faced criticism for being aggressive with clients, physically hitting them, engaging in sexual relationships, and charging high fees. His work was also seen as "incomprehensible," with some labeling it "pseudo-scientific gibberish." Despite the controversy, Lacan's ideas remain highly influential in post-structuralism, critical theory, and film theory.
